LAST PROGRAM

Charlie Eckerly, our in-house expert on Bowl games made his yearly selection of winners.  Before giving his picks, Charlie gave us a little back-ground on bowl games and Alabama and Auburn’s season.  He said he was no expert on what was going on at Auburn, so he didn’t go in too deeply, but he has had enough experience coaching college football to know a few things.  One of those things is evaluation.  When he looked at Auburn’s team, he thinks, that is one of the finest football teams he’s ever seen.  Looking at them individually, they have some real studs.  He doesn’t know what the problem is, but he looks for some heads to roll; perhaps the President, or the Director of Athletics, but the coach is safe.  He coaches, where the teaching comes in is the motivating; teaching the right techniques, the conditioning, everything.  Auburn was picked number 1 in the nation and that didn’t come to be at all.  They played Southern Cal. and lost, but Southern Cal is one of the 2 best teams in the nation.  Auburn played them as good as you could play them.

Things will get better over the years, but they’ve got all those ex-coaches on the payroll.  That has to involve a lot of money.

In Tuscaloosa, they’ve got a fine young coach who learned a lot this year.  He comes from a great football family.  They didn’t have the “horses” this year, because of probation.  The started the first bunch; they played Oklahoma as good as anybody, but they ran out of gas.  Things will get better up there and they have some really good prospects.

Charlie said we’ve been looking at bowl games since time began.  The first 3 years the had not missed a game.  It was a good start, but things got worse.  He talked about 15 games.  He would be happy to win 8 games out of 15, because all the games are just a flip of the coin and that is what he did; flip a coin for 5 of them.

When he was playing football in the 50’s, there were 5 games; Orange, Sugar, Gator, Rose and Cotton; 10 teams altogether. You were blessed if you got to go to a bowl game.  There weren’t too many going.  Today there’s the toilet bowl, kitchen sink bowl; you name it and there is a bowl.  He came up with an idea, but it was too late for this year, but next year he is going to run off the games and let us pick the winners.  There will be a free dinner for the winner and his wife at a good restaurant.  He said we probably have the wrong guy picking them.

The top games this year, each team will get between $14-$17 million.  In the S.E. Conference; 6 teams in the East, 6 in the West; LSU in the Sugar Bowl would get $17 million split 3 ways.  Each team would get a share, plus the commissioner’s office would get a share.  After expenses; LSU wouldn’t have a long way to go, Oklahoma wouldn’t have a long way to go, and expenses wouldn’t be great.  He could see a team spending a couple million without half trying.  After expenses some teams would get $750,000.  It seems to him that some of them would have to go to a bowl, because $750,000 the teams couldn’t go far.

The following are the 15 bowls that Charlie chose and the teams he picked to win.  The underlined teams are his winners.
